Pizza Beer and Wine Pairing — What to Drink by Topping
Pizza comes from Italy, so wine belongs in the conversation as much as beer. The topping decides the answer.
Pairing scores in this article are based on Soolmate's internal evaluation criteria. They are not an external standard.
Most people answer “beer” for pizza, and they are often right. But Margherita, pepperoni, four-cheese, bulgogi, sweet potato, and gorgonzola-honey pizzas are almost different foods. Cheese fat, tomato acidity, spice, and sweetness change the pairing.
The Basic Relationship Between Pizza and Alcohol
Beer works because carbonation repeatedly clears cheese fat. Wine works because acidity resonates with tomato sauce and brightens the slice. The question is how hop bitterness, malt sweetness, wine acidity, and topping aroma meet.

Margherita
Simple mozzarella, tomato, and basil reveal the drink clearly. Lager is clean and safe; Chianti or Montepulciano works when tomato acidity is central. Korean delivery versions often have more cheese, so lager feels easier.
Pepperoni
Pepperoni has smoked, fermented meat, paprika, pepper, and fat. IPA's citrus, tropical, and pine hop notes contrast well with smoke, and bitterness cuts the fat.
Four Cheese
Four-cheese pizza is rich and fatty. High-acid white wine, especially Pinot Gris or unoaked Chardonnay, gradually clears dairy fat and reveals each cheese aroma. Sweet wine also works with blue cheese.
Korean Delivery Pizza Styles
Bulgogi pizza has sweet sauce, onion, mushroom, and cheese. Lager or soju cleans the sweet finish better than bitter IPA. Sweet potato pizza works with light lager or makgeolli because rice sweetness moves in the same direction as sweet potato cream.
Temperature and Rhythm
Serve lager very cold. White wine should be closer to 7-10°C, so take it out of the refrigerator 10-15 minutes before drinking. Keep a steady rhythm: sip, slice, sip, slice.

FAQ
Q. Is soju good with pizza? A. It works with sweeter Korean-style pizzas such as bulgogi or sweet potato. It is weaker with Italian-style tomato and cheese pizzas because it does not add aroma.
Q. Does red wine fit pizza? A. Yes, if it is light and high in acidity, such as Chianti, Montepulciano, Beaujolais, or Pinot Noir. Heavy Cabernet feels too tannic.
Q. Can I keep the same beer when adding pizza to a chimaek table? A. Usually yes. Lager works well with fried chicken, Margherita, and bulgogi pizza, so it is the safest shared option.
Q. Is pizza with makgeolli strange? A. It sounds unusual, but sweet or blue-cheese pizzas can work. Sparkling makgeolli cuts cheese fat in a way similar to lager.
